Day Two
Today's special lesson, boys and girls involves day passes on the London Underground. I don't know why we didn't ask about this yesterday, but unlimited tube-usage for only £4.10 is quite a bar-gain.
Once again, mattresses while travelling abroad tend to be such a collosal disappointment relative to my own bed at home. This alone guarantees a minor degree of homesickness. Last night, I passed out due to travel exhaustion, however, and managed 8 hours or so of sleep. My sleep was interrupted by some middle eastern sounding battle cry at 4am. Upon hearing this, and verifying that we weren't under attack, I used the bathroom. Lacking grace while in a half-asleep state, I stumble to the toilet and turn on--not the bathroom light--but the room light, helping to wake up Ms Tao. But, that's hostel life for ya. They have the light switches right next to each other, and I can never remember which is which.
Following said trip, I get back into bed and prepare to cover myself with my blanket. A stream of moonlight gently lay upon my white blanket. I took a moment to enjoy this quiet, blissful moment, and also noticed there was a little black oblong thing on my blanket. This wouldn't have been so bad had it not been moving.
"OH MY GOD," I say, not quite loud, but enough for Ms. Tao to notice.
"What?" she said blankly, thinking I had a major epiphany, and not a run in with a roach. She later explained that my proper reaction in such a situation should have been along the lines of "Holy shit!"
Needless to say, I guaranteed an interruption in both our slumbers as we hunted for the roach, for though my language was subdued, my instincts were not, and I flung it off my blanket. We then had to find it and kill it. We eventually got back to sleep quite nicely, despite waking up with super-stiff backs.
Yes, hostiles are inexpensive, but they do carry a price in other ways.
Today:
-Visited the Tower of London
-Visited the Tate Modern Art Gallery
-Visited the British Library(saw some ancient books)
-Got lost in Southwark looking for the Tate
-walked the Millenium Bridge over the Thames
-Had fish and chips at an Italian Restaurant in Southwark.
-Found another pub to have a libation.
