A memory.

They dined together in relative silence,
broken by the occasional anecdote.
Finally, he looked back on his life
and told her the precise turning point
where he abandoned the life he wanted,
and left himself open to the life that wanted him.

"where he abandoned the life he wanted,
and left himself open to the life that wanted him."

I love that line.

Thank you!

Beautiful!

So how has the story unfolded from there?

(BTW - you even got the lines to curve! Masterful - even on an aesthetic plane!)

Well, the aestethics weren't intentional so much as the words. And I only jotted that off in a few minutes.

The story didn't really unfold. It was a moment, part of several conversations over the course of the day. I think my friend was evaluating his life and his success, or lack thereof (he's not a loser, but then, I don't think he's where he wants to be relative to his boyish dreams). Our conversations are like that. He'll open up to me in a unexpected way, but only briefly so.

Sometimes I wonder if he is trying to pursue me, but I've not been interested by that notion.

Well, it was very aptly portrayed, and I'm a big fan of your eloquence and artistic ability. Particularly with words.

Why no interest on your behalf? No interest in HIM, or no interest in men right now?

No interest in him, really.

I want a smart man. Not an average guy. I get bored, easily. I want an intellectual challenge and emotional stability. He's not an intellectual challenge, and emotionally, he's a monkey with four asses.

Great, now I'm channelling South Park.

Oh - you want one of those meaningful relationships.

What quantifies one as an emotional 'monkey with four asses'? Inconsideration? Buffoonery? Low level of self-actualization?

Pretty much. The ass to brain ratio is 4:1. But mainly, I wished to use the term "a monkey with four asses." There's something satisfying about saying that.
