"Faith in moral principles, in virtue, and in God, is as necessary for the guidance of a man, as instinct is for the guidance of an animal."
-Morals and Dogma, p. 197

When I went to Beer's Books the other day, I found a little pile of books. One of them was an old book of "Morals and Dogma" prepared for the southern district of Freemasons.

I decided I'd like to pull a random quote from it and share it with you folks. Most likely it should meet with boring results, but we'll see. And when I opened up the book to page 197, the above was what I found.

I'm good until the belief in God part. I think you can function well enough with a nagging suspicion that there is no God. And then there's the notion that humans are animals.

In other news, Russia cut off natural gas to the Ukraine. Interesting. Russia has been in the news lately and appears to be experiencing some turmoil in their free market pursuits. That is to say, the market isn't behaving all that freely there. Especially since one of their chief economists just resigned/was fired from the Russian Government in a snit. All this around the time Russia takes the chair for the G8? Crazy.

Meanwhile, the whole warrantless wiretaps issue continues to intrigue me. We had a process with FISA to address immediate foreign surveillance. And yet Bush decided to go around the law anyway. Furthermore, even the Justice Department was having issues with the program.
