Interesting news about my local region
Feb. 21st, 2007 12:16 pmNatomas is north of Sacramento (I'm south of Sacramento).
This news item popped up on NPR. We've known Natomas has been a high flood risk for years and years. Apparently the levees there are weaker than some thought. Natomas is growing by leaps and bounds. Likely because of its convenient proximity to downtown Sacramento or people that need to split the distance between Davis and Sacramento. It's growing more than Elk Grove as evidenced by Natomas getting a Barnes and Noble and a Borders.( A**h*les. I want my dadgum Barnes and Noble in EG!!! )
Elk Grove is within a few miles of one River (the Sacramento River), Whereas Natomas is closer to Discovery Park (the joining of two rivers, the Sacramento and the American).
The fact of the matter is, most of the flood issues seem to strike areas that aren't expecting floods. I think the last big issue we had hit a bunch of folks out near creeks and not near the rivers.
That said, when we get a big storm, we will have some problems with our levees, based on what I've read. So, Sacramentans: better follow Ford Prefect's advice and have your towel handy. Or Flood Insurance. Or both. I think Renter's policies will take care of flood, but your mileage may vary. Best to verify that.
