weaktwosWell, in about 36 hours, I'll be back home. I do miss it, though I am somewhat in awe of Paris.
Yes, it does seem utterly foreign, but in a good way. Because people seem forced to share space with each other, the environment seems a bit more cooperative here. Children are more well-behaved, people polite, the environment more relaxed.
Ms. Tao and I got up this morning and found a Sunday morning market. We bought breakfast, then some cheese, fruits and baguette for a picnic lunch. We bought coffees, and people watched for an hour. Families were about, some with baskets and basket-carts to do their morning grocery shopping, others with their dogs. All polite and well behaved. Even the beggars are rather polite.
It's been a wonderful journey, and I'll expound on it more, later.
I must relay a somewhat unsavory tale, though.
The other night, Ms. Tao and I were coming home from our wanderings late at night. It was after 11pm. We were on the no. 4 train as per usual. Suddenly, an elderly man, a man of the streets, gristley of appearance, well-worn and drunk, stumbles onto the train with his bottle of the French equivalent of Boon's Farm. Thinking quickly of the "yours and mine" game Ms. Tao and I so often play, I "gave him" to Suzanne. Score 1 point for me for figuratively saddling her with a sloppy ugly drunk.
There was one small problem.
He wanted me.
Yes, when I sit by myself humming, "someday, my prince will come!", I never envisioned this sloping, slurring romeo. He was muttering in speed-french to me, giggling like a drunk, grey haired little girl. He raised his bottle to me, giggled and drank some more. When my stop came up, I darted off that train, evading my destiny once more.
