May. 24th, 2004 06:45 pmI am concerned about the level of hostility people are having about disagreements on political issues.
Is it just me or is it mostly the conservative types, who live in a nation that is supposed to be a haven for freedom of thought, suggest that those who disagree with the actions of our administration leave the country?
The "Love it or Leave it" card really should not be in effect here. Those of us who disagree with current actions are engaging in a "tough love" of sorts with our nation's leaders. So, there is no need to leave, but thanks for asking.
And when a nation like ours continues to take the initiative to kill Iraqis for the sake of their own freedom, the whole world has a right to comment on our actions. People should fight for their own freedom. If you cannot attain your own freedom, how the hell can you maintain it? Fighting for your freedoms is an ongoing battle.
And what was with Tom Delay's comment about Pelosi's criticisms of Bush are dangerous for Americans? Is this similar to "step on a crack, break your mother's back" superstitions? Every time you criticise American actions, an American is scared shitless? Does a puppy or kitten die, too? How about the Baby Jesus? Does dissent make him cry, too?

Them: This better stop or I'm moving to Canada!
Me: Then go!
Them: Fine!
Me: Fine!

Date: 2004-05-25 05:14 pm (UTC)So, by hostilities, I suppose I really meant that I'm not going to reject people, defriend them, or wish them ill for not holding my views. I didn't intend for there not to be a heated exchange, however, because there is some serious shit going down, and people are dying. The whole objective of debate is to exchange ideas, to learn, maybe to persuade. Sometimes rudeness ensues, and that's okay. I don't want someone's communication to be impeded by them needing to tone down their language or thoughts. Say what you think and feel, and expect the same from me. Until someone directly threatens or harms me or others, I'm not going to hold their ideas against them.
That also won't keep me from saying that Tom Delay's comment was stupid, followed up with sarcastic remarks.
Also, I don't hold your default icon against you, either. In fact, if I ever met you in person, I'd have to make sure you flipped me off in order to feel certain it is you. ;-)

I don't think that you can really generalize the conservatives in this. I've met plenty of liberals that were just about as extreme. Those people are more dramaholics than anything else.
I've told someone that they should just find a new home in another country (Cuba?) But this was after about half an hour of listening to this person drone on and on about what a horrible country this is.
Not a one way ticket, you know, give em a two way ticket just in case they really like living in America and that it's not such a bad place afterall.
And you know I'm pretty conservative. I haven't removed anyone from my list just because they're Liberals. And I've seen some irritating shit that delves into the depths of intense idiocy. Hell, one of mine and Patti's best friend is a Liberal. I don't think she's sent any money to John Kerry's campaign, but even still.
*shrugs* But that's okay. I'm conservative and I'm against clean air and water.
