I'm sorry, but Bob Jones III's letter to George Bush is just creepy.

Dear Mr. President:

The media tells us that you have received the largest number of popular votes of any president in America's history. Congratulations!

In your re-election, God has graciously granted America—though she doesn't deserve it—a reprieve from the agenda of paganism. You have been given a mandate. We the people expect your voice to be like the clear and certain sound of a trumpet. Because you seek the Lord daily, we who know the Lord will follow that kind of voice eagerly.

Don't equivocate. Put your agenda on the front burner and let it boil. You owe the liberals nothing. They despise you because they despise your Christ. Honor the Lord, and He will honor you.

Had your opponent won, I would have still given thanks, because the Bible says I must (I Thessalonians 5:18). It would have been hard, but because the Lord lifts up whom He will and pulls down whom He will, I would have done it. It is easy to rejoice today, because Christ has allowed you to be His servant in this nation for another presidential term. Undoubtedly, you will have opportunity to appoint many conservative judges and exercise forceful leadership with the Congress in passing legislation that is defined by biblical norm regarding the family, sexuality, sanctity of life, religious freedom, freedom of speech, and limited government. You have four years—a brief time only—to leave an imprint for righteousness upon this nation that brings with it the blessings of Almighty God.

Christ said, “If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my father honour” (John 12:26).

The student body, faculty, and staff at Bob Jones University commit ourselves to pray for you—that you would do right and honor the Savior. Pull out all the stops and make a difference. If you have weaklings around you who do not share your biblical values, shed yourself of them. Conservative Americans would love to see one president who doesn't care whether he is liked, but cares infinitely that he does right.

Best wishes.

Sincerely your friend,

Bob Jones III
President

PS: A few moments ago I read this letter to the students in Chapel. They applauded loudly their approval.

When I told them that Tom Daschle was no longer the minority leader of the Senate, they cheered again.

On occasion, Christians have not agreed with things you said during your first term. Nonetheless, we could not be more thankful that God has given you four more years to serve Him in the White House, never taking off your Christian faith and laying it aside as a man takes off a jacket, but living, speaking, and making decisions as one who knows the Bible to be eternally true.

Geez, am I the only one who thinks it's not a coincidence that some dude with the initials BJ sucks up to Bush? And would someone please tell these Christian folks that the Church and State should remain separate? Good grief.

I am currently re-watching this week's episode of Bill Moyer's "Now". On it, Sister Joan Chittister is interviewed about the issue of religion in politics. She had some wonderful things to say, as well as interesting. It is nice to see a devoutly religious woman speak reasonably, as well as spiritually.

One point I found interesting is her comment about no understanding how the pro-lifers could support the war on Iraq. She said that some of the victims in Iraq are bound to be pregnant women. And there you have military abortion. I suppose what it comes down to is that certain folks are just pro-Christian life.

I am a Christian who believes VERY STRONGLy in the separation of Church and State. Joan Chittister and John Spong are our "voices in the wilderness" Let them ring loud and clear to the uninformed and ignorant masses.

I actually have a tiny spark of hope that Dubya sees that doing anything more than graciously receiving this letter would be political suicide and he will leave it alone. Otherwise, if he does try to do something one of two things will happen. 1.) The conservatives will continue to ride this wave of accomplishment that they feel over the election and they will push through a CHristian agenda (scary) OR 2.) He will try it and the moderate Christians who voted for him will rise up with us "Godless liberals" and he will be booted out of office. I hope for ignoring it and maybe he will do some good somewhere (I know I am a "cock" eyed optimist. pun intended) or he will run his own ass out of office with his stupidity.

It seems like if you're pro-life, you ought to believe in the sanctity of ALL human life, which includes not just fetuses (fetii?!?!?), but also, you know, actual people. Pro-lifers should be concerned about our military losses, but also *any* Iraqi life lost in this war, because their lives have been taken away too.

I'm sure that's not what many of them are thinking, though.

what's the ascii symbol for trying to hold back puke?

This bit was the best bit:
God has graciously granted America ... a reprieve from the agenda of paganism

I didn't realize we were just one election away from returning to the blood-soaked path to Babylon.
