Check out this exchange on Fox News.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] imlac for the link.

Come, witness a Fox News correspondent try to say that having a military parade and prayer service for soldiers is adequate recognition for our troops.

$40million dollars and ten parties in honor of George Bush. In a time of war. While our soldiers are dying for an unjust war. As the journalist from Vanity Fair comments, our soldiers are using scrap metal to try to shield themselves, yet Bush can afford $40 million dollars to throw a party for himself.

see but you are under the false assumption as is she, that if he didn't have the parties, that money would go to the troops or some other worthwhile purpose. The government doesn't work that way. The troops get what they are going to get and that has been decided already. Honoring them with a prayer service has nothing to do with money. I may love and respect someone but give them money? that's a whole different animal. especially if you're the government.

She's areguing 2 separate (and valid) point but she's trying to connect them when there is no connection. $40 million is a waste of money, but the goverment wastes money all the time, and when they want to do somethign like that, they find the money or take it from us the taxpayer. the don't consider whether they have it or can afford it or not. And the troops do need more funding if they are in that poor shape, but again, that needs to be specifically decided and addressesd, right now the administration is obviously content with the amount they are spending and the quality of equipment they are provideing. that opinion and decisions based on it are unaffected by any extra money we have or what else we are doing. If they decided our troops were underfunded, they'd pass a bill to appropriate more money and then they'd find it, either in our coffers, social security, printing it, or taxes.

And Bush obviously doesn't feel the war is unjust, so you can't expect him to feel bad for throwing a party during an unjust war. I understand her points and agree with them separately but she just isn't knowledgeable in understanding things and thus hurts her cause by going about it the wrong way.
