Art Deprecation Workshop #1

I was looking through some of the artwork I saw while in Paris. From time to time, I will post a painting I saw, and share my commentary on it.

This one is by Paul de Vos (1595-1678)

It is entitled, "Le Paradis terrestre"

Paradise on earth

Paul does a wonderful job depicting a series of animals in their natural state: drunk, passed out, and/or horny. Check out that lion on the right. How many Leos do you know who look exactly like this? Any one want to venture a guess what the fox is doing (left of lion)?

There might be a good reason why the Mona Lisa is viewed as a masterpiece and why this little number shows up in variations on the cover of your local Jehovah's Witness' Watchtower magazine.

I don't think I want to know what the fox is doing ...

In that case, I think you do know. ;-)

He's a friend of Count Dooky.

"Le Paradis terrestre" looks decidedly hostile. They all appear to be snarling or angry in one way or another.

Think they smelled the Frenchman in the scene? ;Þ

Maybe they're all German...

I wasn't struck by hostility...the cat maybe. But the horses and the dog look relaxed, the Lion looks goofy. The squirrel looks like it's trying to smell its feet.
