There be Absinthe in New York. (hat tip to syreene for the link)

Supposedly, it is thujone free. Sadly, even the modern day thujone content in today's bottles of Absinthe did not appear potent. Apparently they are selling out, though, so I won't be sampling it any time soon.

Apparently this absinthe is made with real wormwood and probably does contain trace amounts of thujone. I'm going to try it.

My friend still has a bottle of real absinthe he smuggled back from the Czech Republic & has promised someday we can try the full fire & sugar technique...however, since it's supposedly anise flavor, I'm not expecting to like it much, but I am curious... :)

Yeah, I saw some Czech-sinthe for $175/bottle with 100 mg/kg of thujone. I may have to order some. The French stuff I have was anti-climactic.

I haven't found a line on how to get some of this yet. I suppose I'll wait for the novelty to die out.

I've got a bottle that a friend smuggled back from Europe. It does have a pretty heavy anise flavor. After the first drink, however, you don't even notice it anymore.

I still have a sealed liter bottle of Absinthe I brought back from Czech Republic. Lugged that heavy f$%#er in my backpack for a month (along with wine, grappa, and limoncello from Italy). I've been waiting for a suitably special occasion to crack it open, cuz I know once I open it, it won't last long. :)

We had a few shots of that every night in Prague to go with the Budvar (i.e. the original Budwieser) beer. Oh yeah, the beer there has a 12% alcohol content. There is also a pretty nifty trick to drinking Absinthe that involves fire.

BTW, I do think it's pretty cool that I've smuggled a controlled substance through U.S. Customs...

You're right, that is very cool!

But, I'd be more impressed if you had keistered the bottle. ;-)

Can you tell me the brand you acquired? I'd be curious to find out which one you bought. There's a Spirit of the King, or something, that has 100mg/kg of thujone..which is more than any other brands I've seen so far...

The brand is "Hills"

It doesn't say anything about chemical contents, but it is 140 proof.

Have you ever drank real Absinthe? Man, it really messes you up. My brother was hallucinating and having panic attacks in the middle of the night and woke up everyone in the hostel. Good times, good times... ;)

I have, but it did not have that effect on me, sadly. I ordered it from France, though, and as I understand it, it's weaker than the Czech goodness. I plan on acquiring some good Czech stuff soon and doing a "Pepsi challenge" test with Lucid.

good luck! :)

Do you know the trick with sugar and fire? It really makes that evil tasting stuff easier to drink. There is a special kind of spoon they like to use, I stole a couple. Every bar we went to had a dish of sugar packets and those spoons on every table.

I just remembered one of the oddest experiences ever. We were walking around in Prague (awesome city, btw) and there was a small stage set up seemingly at random on a sidewalk and a really, really good ABBA tribute band was performing. There wasn't any kind of festival or party or suitible atmosphere, just a random city street with a stage and an ABBA tribute band. Odd.

I haven't tried the fire routine, but I have the spoon, and I've done the sugar cube and trickle of water routine.

However, I do plan on trying that next time. :-)
