This is nice
Jun. 2nd, 2003 01:13 pmOn some bru-ha-ha about a developmentally disabled deaf woman who was raped and impregnated. Apparently Jeb Bush was trying to appoint a guardian for the fetus...http://www.cnn.com/2003/LAW/06/02/florida.fetus.guardian/index.html
Forget about the disabled Mother, who has the mental capacity of a four year old.

I'm glad the courts chose to appoint a guardian for the woman. But I'm disturbed by the whole situation. There's a real tendency to push the mentally handicapped into abortions they don't want. Obviously this woman will not be able to care for the child, but it should be her choice whether or not she has the baby and puts it up for adoption. At six months, she can feel it moving and kicking her. She is aware of it. I'm leery of the state coming in and deciding for her.
So Jeb may be an asshole (that's pretty much a given), but the pro-choicers' knee-jerk reaction is just as upsetting for me.

What is sad is that they let it go this far. These women should have been appointed a guardian right away, they shouldn't have had to wait 6 months to make a decision.
