On some bru-ha-ha about a developmentally disabled deaf woman who was raped and impregnated. Apparently Jeb Bush was trying to appoint a guardian for the fetus...http://www.cnn.com/2003/LAW/06/02/florida.fetus.guardian/index.html

Forget about the disabled Mother, who has the mental capacity of a four year old.

Oh my. This is a hard one.

Of course, anything Jeb does is generally a terrible idea. That goes without saying. But I see another side here that might be a problem.

I'm glad the courts chose to appoint a guardian for the woman. But I'm disturbed by the whole situation. There's a real tendency to push the mentally handicapped into abortions they don't want. Obviously this woman will not be able to care for the child, but it should be her choice whether or not she has the baby and puts it up for adoption. At six months, she can feel it moving and kicking her. She is aware of it. I'm leery of the state coming in and deciding for her.

So Jeb may be an asshole (that's pretty much a given), but the pro-choicers' knee-jerk reaction is just as upsetting for me.

I agree with you. I now realize I misread the article in my haste. There were two cases up before the courts: one for a deaf, developmentally disabled woman with a mind of a 4 year old, and then this one was developmentally disabled 22 year old with the mind of a 1 year old. Both raped.

I can't imagine how the guardian would decide what these women with the mind of children would do. I mean, if you had a one year old daughter, what decision could she make?

What is sad is that they let it go this far. These women should have been appointed a guardian right away, they shouldn't have had to wait 6 months to make a decision.
