A management position opened up in our Colorado Springs office today. One that I am quite qualified for.

Now I must decide: just because I CAN do it, do I WANT to do it?

Piffle and snoot.

I noticed that you list atheism and agnosticism in your interests.

If you're of those opinions... well, let me just tell you that Colorado Springs is the very definition of fundie hell.

Don't get me wrong -- I love living here. I love the spirituality of the mountains, our mild winters, the small-town-yet-not-real-small-town atmosphere. It's a great place to raise children.

But the political atmosphere is somewhat -- well, conservative. It's like a constant uphill battle for me. Oh, I've managed to find a lot of people who are more liberal like myself, but Focus on the Family is here, which should speak for itself.

Also, another reason why this city is so conservative is because there are so many military installations in the area, including NORAD (which includes Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Base), Fort Carson, Peterson Air Force Base, Shriever AFB, and the Air Force Academy. There's a serious inbalance of male/female ratio because of it, although a lot of Ft. Carson is deployed to Iraq, including some of my friends.

At any rate, if you have serious questions about the city (seeing that it sounds like you're making a serious career move), feel free to ask. I've lived here for 26 years (I'm 28), so I'd like to think I know a thing or two about it.

What has kept you there, then?

I'm used to being a liberal in conservative surroundings, I work for a company that is very close to the military. :-)

Family, roots. Plus, I love this state. I can't imagine living anywhere but in the shadow of Pikes Peak and the mountains; I can't imagine dying anywhere else.

Do you work for Lockheed or Raytheon or something?

Nope...I work for the company that insures military personell and their familes...my office there is within view of pikes peak, and the academy.

I've visited there once. I did enjoy the natural surroundings. My coworker and I visited FoF because she's interested in it. I suppressed a gag.

Oh, er, Tricare?

My dad is retired army.

I have to suppress the urge to Molotov Cocktail that facility every time I drive by. >_>

Ahhh!

Yeah, USAA has a huge building up north. Actually, that's not too far from where I work.

I'll tell you, though -- if you want to do it, now's the time. It seems like EVERY apartment complex in the city is offering move-in specials. The vacancy rate is very high right now because of the military (so many people are deployed right now). It's like everywhere I look, I see signs that read, "Live free for a year! Ask management how!" They have a lot of deals for having the first 3 months rent-free. Just a bunch of deals.

Search for some apartments here, to get an idea.

Thanks for the info. If I moved, I would probably buy a house there. In the event I applied and got the job I'm considering, I would get a move package enabling me to purchase a new home.

Oh, that'd be cool. You can use realtor.com to get an idea of the home prices around here, too. The cost of living isn't nearly as high here as it is in CA, so you'll find that your dollars will take you a lot farther.

Yeah, I have a small home here (1344sq ft) that's worth 232...I bought at 148.

Man, my townhome is 1575 sq ft and I got it for $55K six years ago.
