Feb. 8th, 2004 07:05 amGood morning,folks.
It's 7:05am, and I'm here babysitting our equipment while a special ceiling cleaning is going on in our computer area.
While personally, I'm not too thrilled to be here, the promise of additional filthy lucre aided me in getting up at 5:30 in the morning to give myself enough time to brew a metric ton of coffee in order to bolster my alertness this fine morn. I have plenty to keep me busy, ranging from the practical to the impractical.
Issues I'm contemplating:
-I feel the need to get more involved in my community, be it political or otherwise. Now I just need to decide what is the contribution I want to make.
-Marvelling at the idea that in the United States, we are all Americans. We want safe homes, healthy families, and the right to express our individuality. However, we can differ so significantly in how we need to arrive at those destinations. This fascinates me. I can not believe in God, yet the person right next to me will have a totally different belief. Yet we seem to be exposed to the same "real world".
-Non-wealthy Republicans strike me as fools. They are supporting people who do not wish to support them. This is not how Social Contracts should work. However, I'll take a Republican who is passionate and concerned about current events over someone who chooses to and claims to know nothing about political current events. At least there is a passion to care about the world around them.

History also continues to demonstrate that those in power often become corrupted by it, and take advantage of it, to the detriment of many.

Date: 2004-02-09 09:15 pm (UTC)But I'm concerned about other issues, like the doubling of household debt from 4 bil to 8bil, and the 600% increase in bankruptcy declarations by women from 1981 to 1999. Sure, we have a lot of idiots out there, but not quite that many. Besides, everyone is someone else's idiot. There's other issues I'm concerned about, like the working poor...homeless people who are working but still can't make enough to live in their own home/apartment.(Doesn't your ex still live with you free of rent because she barely can make ends meet?) I'm intrigued by folks like the Executives of Enron getting a little jail time, but their employees getting duped out of their jobs and life savings.
Granted, we've got Ricardo's theory that suggest while foreign nations lure away our jobs, we need to find another niche to employ our people, it amounts to a lot of broken hearts and lives during the transition. Economics is cold and unfeeling that way. And not everyone has a nice ex bf they can rely on that can help them out until they get on their feet.
