On the drive into work this fine morn, I listened to this interesting interview with regard to polling Iraqis for their opinion about U.S. occupation, the U.S. going to war, etc. The gentleman interviewed does polls for ABC.

I find it interesting that the Iraqis seem to feel that they are a little better off, but yet they are not overwhelmingly in favor of democracy, or overwhelmingly fond of U.S. occupation.

reminds me of shawshank redemption and being "institutionalized". you have been ruled with an iron fist for so long, all of a sudden all that freedoma nd responsibility is confusing. besides which they have values very different from ours, they are much less liberal to begin with, look at their view of women and religion. So they were not entirely clamoring for freedom and being repressed and we released them. they were sort of in a groove living like that, and this will be foreign to most of them. you can argue they may not want it, maybe because they don't know enough to, like the russians did, until they experienced it.

Indeed. There has already been some studies/analysis done that explains why democracies cannot work in certain countries. I think this poll demonstrates such challenges. Too many diverse groups in there do not want to abide by the same social contract.

yeah well democracy requires generally acceptance of differences and more than one way of doing things, and allowing things we do not like. I don't know if they are up for that.

Not yet, they aren't. We're going to have to occupy them for years and years.
