I started a little fire amongst a few people in [livejournal.com profile] 2004_elections. I'd like to know what you all think about it.

It revolves around the current hostage situation involving students and their parents in Russia.

I know it's a hideous act perpetrated by the Chechans, but then, I also know this is in response to a number of actions the Russians have performed against the Chechans. This conflict has origins dating back to the 17th century.

The point I was trying to make in the discussion, and I am unsure if I was successful, is that by continuing to react to each terrorist act like it is an isolated incident, and retaliating accordingly is not the solution to the problem of terrorism. It seems to me that the terrorism and violence will be perpetuated. When I look at the bigger picture, I can't tell who is truly at fault anymore. At some point, both sides need to make some concessions and be dedicated to not fighting each other. Dropping another bomb on the situation is not going to knock sense into anyone. There's just more fear, more authoritarianism, less freedom, and less life, and people growing up where violence is the norm.
