I was lurking in someone's livejournal today, and saw that several of his posts included lines about how his relationship with God was going great, etc. It almost seemed like everything was planned out for him. He did have a few concerns, though. He was concerned what seemed to be God's blessing might be the devil in disguise.

It seemed to me, and I could be wrong, that a lot of responsiblity of others and himself was waved, thanks to his awesome relationship with God, and the plans God had for him.

Such language is utterly foreign to me.

I don't know; his relationship with God doesn't seem all that fun. I mean, it might be worth a chuckle if God placed his hand in a holy grail of warm water while he was dreaming of God's great plan for him. Or, I doubt we'll ever see a post like, "God and I got into a fight, and God said he made me ugly and dressed me funny. But he laughed when I told him that not all of us can walk around in long, white flowing robes all day."

There's faith and then there's ... something else. Back in high school I helped one of my friends move his older sister & her kids into a new apartment. She had no job and no income, although I believe she was on welfare. I overheard her telling someone that she couldn't afford the rent, but she just loved the new apartment so much when she saw it and 'the Lord will provide,' so she rented it.

My favorite joke about this:
A huge storm is raging, and a small town begins to flood. The police knock on the door of one house and tell the owner he has to evacuate. "No," he calmly replies, "The Lord will save me if that's His plan for me."

So the floodwaters rise, and the first floor of the man's house is flooded. Leaning out the second-story window, he sees some firefighters in a boat. "Hey, get in the boat, we'll take you to safety!" they yell. "No," the man calmly replies, "The Lord will save me if that's His plan for me."

The firefighters go off to rescue other people, and the floodwaters continue to rise. Now the man is on his roof, and a rescue helicopter flies overhead. The crew drops a rope ladder. "Grab the ladder and we'll save you!" they shout. "No," the man calmly replies, "The Lord will save me if that's His plan for me."

So the floodwaters continue to rise, and the man drowns. He goes to heaven and asks to see God. "Lord," the man cries, "I was faithful to You! I went to church every Sunday, I was a pillar of the community, and I led a moral life. I had faith in Your divine plan for me, and still you let me drown!"

And the Lord replied, "I sent you a police car, a boat, and a helicopter. What more did you want from Me?"
