weaktwosI'm sitting here watching the beginning of the Carter interview.
Mattie Stepanek introduced the Carters.
He's wheelchair bound. Has a tube in his throat. He's got a big IV bag on his wheelchair. He looks like a 10 year old. A little research on the net informs me that Mattie has muscular dystrophy. It turns out he's 11. Perhaps by now, he's 12. He's written 4 books of poetry. He was born with this disease. He probably won't live very long. The kid can't even take a normal breath.
Adversity. Sometimes it takes your body, othertimes, it takes your mind. There is no need to simply marvel at the injustice of it all, one merely needs to overcome the obstacles before them.
With immense poise and elequence, he introduced the former President and his wife. His four books aside, this lad has likely touched more lives by the time he was 12 than most of us do in our lifetime.
Some say the world is a cruel place. I really don't think so. It's neither cruel nor not cruel. It just is. It's not fair, and in the aggregate, it's not overly generous. It is up to us dodge the obstacles and let the Fates play slaughterball with someone else.
