I just returned from seeing Richard Shindell and Lucy Kaplanski perform at the Winters Opera House. They were fantastic as usual. Richard departed from his normal acoustic guitar magic and performed most of his songs with an electric guitar. Contrary to his email, he did not bring a bouzouki to play.

Shucks. He was still wonderful. Lucy opened up with a Lyle Lovett cover that has me laughing still. I must share the lyrics with you:

Who keeps on trusting you
When you've been cheating
And spending your nights on the town
And who keeps on saying that he still wants you
When you're through running around
And who keeps on loving you
When you've been lying
Saying things ain't what they seem
God does
But I don't
God will
But I won't
And that's the difference
Between God and me

So who says he'll forgive you
And says that he'll miss you
And dream of your sweet memory
God does
But I don't
God will
But I won't
And that's the difference
Between God and me

I love Lyle when I hear songs like this.

Today's drum lesson was good again. My problem? Not enough practice. Furthermore, the Nutwalls haven't been able to get together frequently. So, I need to start doing something about that.

Christine Lavin! She's another with a checkered dating history to fuel some excellent songwriting.

Okay, now get this. I am not lying.

Last year my bestest friend from college went to see Christine Lavin play in Cincinnati, OH. It was a fairly small gig, and afterward he went up to talk to her and tell her he'd been a fan for over fifteen years. Then it turns out that there was something wrong with her rental car, so he ended up offering her a ride and then driving her to Dayton where she was staying. And so he got to hang out, for several hours, with Christine Lavin, who is (he assured me) just as funny in person, and she told him:

that she'd dated a married man for almost twenty years, and he was a lot of the source material for her songs;
he was very married but also filthy rich, and staying married for estate reasons, or So He Said;
but she finally decided enough was enough and dumped him last year;
after which he was struck by a car, GOT AMNESIA, FORGOT THAT SHE BROKE UP WITH HIM, and was rendered a helpless semi-invalid for months while she nursed him, because, as she assured my friend, "How do you re-dump a guy in a situation like that? You don't. You just don't."

That was Our Heroine as we left her. Maybe future albums will reveal the rest of the story.
