Okay, your boyfriend tells you that he needs to tell you something important. He takes you to a cave, transports you to his ice-castle and proceeds to fashion an engagement ring out of coal he's compressed with his own fist and fused onto a simple gold band.

Coal is made from carbon. Squeezing it isn't going to turn it into gold. He could maybe squeeze it into a diamond. That would at least make sense elementally.

I'm a season or so behind in Smallville because I only get FOX, but it sounds like they've gotten weird with this Fortress of Solitude stuff.

SPOILER! Albeit a tiny one...

He squeezed the coal into the diamond, then fused it to a gold band he'd brought with him via heat-vision. :) However, as I'm saying in my recap, he's got some excellent faceting capabilities in his hand, because a raw diamond looks like a grayish baseball until it's cut. :)

I guess if you gotta man who can fly and is strong enough to make a diamond out of his fist, he's also got the power to "cut" the diamond into an attractive shape with his mind. ;-)
