Lessee, some bookkeeping:
-Vodka Martini tasting last night was good fun
-I recently acquired the first volume of
chaodai's "The Middleman". 'Tis in the reading queue.
-Google Calendar seems pretty cool.
-I want to do more Saints du Jour, but I keep getting distracted by other things. Dammit.
-Thanks,
kickadee, for this. Good lord.
-I've been enjoying my study a lot more now that it is far more organized. Now I just need to work on getting rid of more crap.
You know, I'm not so sure that immigrants place as much of a burden as some folks argue. It seems to me that our method of handling immigration so far has worked out fairly well. When I think of what some immigrants do to come here, I'm amazed. I mean, here I am, born as a citizen of this fine country. I was given many privileges that a lot of poor kids in Mexico do not have. I grew up, got a job, and am a productive member of society. I want for very little. I don't feel compelled to immigrate elsewhere yet, because I have it too good here. So, when I think that there are millions of Mexicans who find risking their life and safety to come to this country, I have to wonder how fucking bad it is for them over in Mexico.
Instead of spending vast quanties of money to keep them out, we should dedicate our resources to help make Mexico a more attractive place to stay in. I think the construction of a wall along the US-Mexican Border and other techniques will keep the more honest people out, and only the cleverer law breakers will come into the country.
I hear some Americans argue that mexicans here are working so cheaply that they cause wages here to go down, making it harder for our citizens to get jobs at a living wage. Now, if we keep all the Mexicans out, are wages for the jobs the Mexicans did going to go up? Or will businesses who would have survived off of Mexicans go out of business, or set up operations in Mexico? Or will prices go up for the goods that Mexicans helped construct because wages went up, causing the real income of those poor white folks to remain as non-living as ever?
I think Fareed Zakaria has some good points to make. I think we've handled immigration pretty well. In countries where they put limits similar to what we are currently proposing, we create more problems than we solve.
Part of me likes to see more open borders with various citizens. I think if trade and immigration is more free, we can do nothing but benefit from the cultural exchange. I don't understand why certain Americans feel their culture is threatened by letting others live in this country. I thought our culture was a culture of freedom.
Some new fossils have been found that help close some gaps in our evolutionary past. Any early ape fossil and a fish fossil.
I remember when I was reading Lee Strobel's "A Case for a Creator", and some of these gaps in evolution were used as an argument for why Evolution was such a weak theory and that Creation Science must be favored. As if, once again, Evolution could not coexist with the existence of a God. Whatever. It looks like Creation Scientists are going to have to learn to get along with Evolution.
Enough of my yackin'. Time to hit the sack.
