I was reading a synopsis on the classical Biblical notion of "Original Sin". Legend has it that Adam and Eve were kickin' it in the Garden of Eden. In this garden was the tree of life and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Adam was forbidden to eat from the tree of knowledge.

But he did. So he then he had knowledge of good and evil. Sadly, we just have knowledge of it, not necessarily the ability to tell the difference between the two. Not having been raised with a lot of exposure to religion, I was kind of depressed by this concept. First, I think Adam and Eve should have nabbed more fruit off the knowledge tree, because we sure as heck didn't depart Eden with enough knowledge. On the other hand, I think Adam and Eve should have avoided the tree of knowledge because they could have inadvertently done all sorts of bad things, but would have had no idea what they were doing was evil. They could have had an eternal excuse of , "wow! I'm sorry! I had no idea that was evil."

By eating from the tree they disobeyed God therefore 'learned' evil. According to the Bible they had committed no sin until that point. Satan actually convinced Eve that eating the fruit would maker her wiser and more knowledgable just as God had told her. So she ate of it. Then convinced Adam to do the same probably because God had told Adam to love Eve as his own flesh and blood. So in the end it was God's commandments that essentially condemned Adam and Eve, but it was their own free will that got them in that position.

What is even more interesting is that according to the Old King James - assumed to be the most accurate translation to English of the original texts - after the fall we lost our free will to choose our 'destiny' and only seek evil unless we are chosen by God to seek His Son and thereby find our salvation through His payment for our sins. Evil by the way is defined as _not_ doing what God says not just the 10 commandments as many believe.

So there you go, that is your religious studies lesson for the day. ;)

Yes, it is a pity, but a sad reality.

Have they published a bible that was written earlier in the "spiritual telephone game"?

I'm thinking they could have done some things that God would have frowned upon.

It almost seems as if Adam and Eve were God's domesticated pets and Eden was a habitrail.

I wouldn't slap them silly. I'd just make sure they grabbed more apples.

That reminds me a lot of Steve Martin's "I forgot!" excuse. :)
