This morning, while I was languising in my bedchamber, I watched part of Queen Elizabeth I starring Helen Mirren. First off, I love Helen Mirren. Second, I love Queen Elizabeth I. How sad for a monarchy to have a women ruler before a democracy ever did. Granted, the United States wasn't formed by then. Even so, they still had Margaret Thatcher!

But I digress. Anyway, there is no doubt Elizabeth I led an extraordinary life. However,if there is any truth to Wikipedia's entry on her story, there was quite a lot of poetic license taken with QEI's tale in the HBO movie.

However, there were some good lines in the movie. One of my favorites, "...Women have forgotten more cruelty than men can remember!" Sadly, it's true.

An another, which is slightly paraphrased, I think, "Such is the great weakness of clear-thinking people. They always assume others think like they do."

This is generally the weakness of all people.

Did you see her on Oprah? Oprah asked her how she went from I to II and she nearly didn't go for II. She [Mirren] said "There's all the crowns and the ruffs and the jewels for QEI and then I'm looking at all those brown shoes for QEII and saying I can't do this. I am rather vain and girly, you know." That's a paraphrase, but it was rather funny.

Hah! No, I didn't see that, but that's funny coming from Mirren, who played Ayn Rand, for Chrissakes. And then there's all her Prime Suspect work! Vain and girly, my ass!

Need I mention Gosford Park?

But yes, that is quite a contrast. And it's funny for her to play I and II.

I hate the queen. I hate all monarchs, past and present. Okay, I suppose there are times where it is the best of a bad situation, but any time after 1700 or so there is just no justifiaction for any sort of monarchy. I can't believe that still to this day some countries support monarchies. They're a vestiage, otioise, irrelevant. They are horrible, spoiled human beings who live off the public dole and do nothing of substance for the people. I hear all this buzz about Miren's QEII performance, but I don't think I could tolerate it because it buys into this idea of glamor and elevation for royalty that needs to be abolished.

Did you see Calendar Girls? She was a funny sort of girly in that one. Helen Mirren kills me. She's supposed to be playing Elinor in the upcoming (2008) Inkspell. Should be good!

Oh yes. Mirren is fantastic because she can play a role like Calendar Girls, and also play rolls as she did in "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover". There's nothing she cannot do!

Oh and she was the total snobby fashion bitch who didn't like kids in Raising Helen.
