A coworker's daughter died in a car accident yesterday.

What are most of life's daily problems but miniscule compared to a mother having to bury her child? Even though her daughter was an adult...it's still the wrong order of things.

Having had death take others from me, seen death happen in real-time, and having caused death to happen myself, I have come to realize that life's daily problems are the only handle to reality that we have to hold on to. It is what keeps us from falling down and never getting up.

I've often felt that life's obstacles are to be overcome. Number one, it keeps you busy. Number two, often, there's a feeling of accomplishment at having faced your problem and beaten it.

And then there's stuff like this, when there's nothing you can do, nothing you could have done to make it better aside for comforting the grieving.

What doesn't kill you or your friends probably not only makes you stronger, but it may make for one hell of a good punchline from time to time.
