The silence of the neighborhood on this chilly Monday morning is a tad eerie.

I stayed up late last night, but got up around the same time I would normally be getting ready for work. The fact that this is no surprise does not assuage my annoyance.

hey, just to let you know... TiVo series 3 has the capabilities for both analog and digital closed captions. I don't know what the problems were on earlier models but many hearing impaired people complained and they finally did something about it!

Awesome! The series 3 is a great machine. Did you validate if the more affordable TivoHD works equally as well?

I don't know if you saw this link, in case you weren't already aware of some deals: http://www.tivolovers.com/2007/10/23/deals-deals-deals-get-your-tivo-oh-and-one-on-hd-dvd/

Amazon is selling the series three for 549, and then there's a 200 rebate after that! Given that, I wouldn't bother with the Tivo HD.

If you decide to go that route, be prepared to do some investigations on Cable Cards in the Tivo community. The early adopters experienced some problems where cable installers were not using properly formated cable cards to install, and the Series 3 was having issues with them. That didn't happen to me, but it happened to a number of folks. HOpefully, cable technicians have become more learned. I think it was a matter of them not understanding the technology yet.

Yeah, people complained that the TiVO HD's captions don't work right in both formats (analog & digital). Series 3 is the only one endorsed by TiVO to work properly in the two different ways. Another complaint was that people had to turn the captions on through the menu each time they turn the TV on?? There's no CC button apparently on the remote. If you see it on your remote when you get home, let me know...

I see that the upgrade to lifetime membership means being a customer and getting your equipment. If I get another a year from now, do I have to pay for 2 subscriptions for 2 TVs or will one suffice to work for both TiVos?

No, there is no CC button on the remote. Did they create any remote codes to activate CC otherwise?

Since I'm home right now, I just futzed with close captioning. You activate it in the settings menu. You can even choose the font and color and size! Kinda fun. Now, if you need to change settings while you're watching the show live, you press the info button and you can navigate to the cc settings using your arrow buttons on the remote.
