Stevia...

Trader Joe's is now selling Stevia in their stores. Or perhaps they have always sold Stevia, they just finally placed it near the baking area.

For those who don't know about Stevia, check here.

So, I'm sweetening my coffee with it the past few days. It is definitely sweet, but not like sugar. But there's definitely a little extra somethin-somethin' on my tongue. As the site suggests, I think I put too much in.

I only put in two scoops! And each scoop is smaller than the tip of your pinky finger.

So, do any of you use Stevia, and what do you think?

I am definitely still in the process of waking up, because I had Stevia confused with Salvia (salvia divinorum), and I was thinking, "whoa, *somebody's* taking a walk on the wild side" ;)

And then I got a Sarah McLachlan song stuck in my head.

The obligatory point: I haven't tried it (neither Salvia nor Stevia :b )

Hah! Great segue to Mclachlan. That was fantastic. :-)

But hey, that Salvia sounds like a hoot! That would be fun to secretly replace someone's sugar with Salvia divinorum, and then solicit user feedback. Boy, howdy! That would make marketing research a blast!

Is Stevia better than Splenda?

It's possible that it is. I have some other friends who use it and have no issues with it, and the reasons the FDA will not approve it to seem suspect.

Having a former wife who was a botanist by avocation, I was introduced to stevia a few years' back. Tastes Nothing like Splenda (No chemical aftertaste) and does bear a remarkable similarity to Cane Sugar's flavor profile. I'm certain the odd stuff is simply some stray bit of plant protein, since stevia is processed from leaves, and I found that just the Merest amount would get things done, so experiment. I find it pleasant, but since I use processed sugar so little, I find the expense unnecessary.

It looks very interesting, but I'm sitting here thinking - the only thing I use sugar in is oatmeal. So in your opinion, does this stuff have a flavor more like raw sugar, or processed sugar?

Closer to processed sugar, almost like Confectioners' sugar. Not bad and not difficult to acquire a taste for.

I get an icky aftertaste with it, almost licorice-like, but not in a good way.

This is especially gross when using it with something like chamomile tea. Gah.
