Sheesh. I've got three words for the sticker whiners: Boo. Fuckin'. Hoo. These two have it right:
"I have to admit this is a perk we're being given, and it's not a life or death situation," said Strnad, a writer. "If you don't want to put stickers on and accept the perk, it's not that big of a deal."
"I think the 'outrage' over the stickers is more than a little silly," Prius owner Jon Miller of Altadena said in an e-mail. "The decals are not attractive by any means, but neither are they the end of Western civilization, nor are they a conspiracy to humiliate hybrid owners."
Okay, so those three words are for me. But hey, it is a problem when all the other stickers we've ever been forced to place on our vehicle are tasteful and yet obvious. I've got a license plate that can easily be cross-referenced. I'm driving a frickin' prius. All priuses are allowed in the carpool lane. There are a ton of different options. If there weren't I wouldn't be so annoyed.
Sorry, I've got to agree with the anti-sticker people. One sticker on the rear bumper should be perfectly sufficient to let law enforcement know the car is permitted to drive in the carpool lane. Four giant stickers on all sides of the car is excessive. The article doesn't really address why so many stickers are necessary. You have a sticker the size of a postage stamp to indicate that you've registered the car, and that's a legal requirement. It's weird.
Unfortunately I don't have the full details, but according to my friend who is active in Prius forums...
"There are big ol' threads on multiple prius forums on trying to get around putting the stickers on the paint...there's no metal where the stickers need to go, but someone figured out that it's 3M that makes the stickers, and posted a link to directions on how to remove them safely."
He has reposted asking for the 3M URL again, so I'll send it to you if he gets it. So it sounds like one day there will be a way to save your pretty paint, but while you're driving in the carpool lane, you'll have to live with an ugly, defaced hybrid vehicle. ;)
The 3M PDF is now posted here for download...but it does require an industrial heat gun, a 30-degree pulling angle, plus ambient temperature must be 60F or more, so it doesn't sound like the easiest process...sorry! I hope that means they are damn hard to steal off the car, not that attempting to remove it by the wrong method will just ruin the car paint but left the thief run off with the sticker...
