Unfortunately I don't have the full details, but according to my friend who is active in Prius forums...
"There are big ol' threads on multiple prius forums on trying to get around putting the stickers on the paint...there's no metal where the stickers need to go, but someone figured out that it's 3M that makes the stickers, and posted a link to directions on how to remove them safely."
He has reposted asking for the 3M URL again, so I'll send it to you if he gets it. So it sounds like one day there will be a way to save your pretty paint, but while you're driving in the carpool lane, you'll have to live with an ugly, defaced hybrid vehicle. ;)
The 3M PDF is now posted here for download...but it does require an industrial heat gun, a 30-degree pulling angle, plus ambient temperature must be 60F or more, so it doesn't sound like the easiest process...sorry! I hope that means they are damn hard to steal off the car, not that attempting to remove it by the wrong method will just ruin the car paint but left the thief run off with the sticker...
